Iris Apfel (née Iris Barrel, born on August 29, 1921) is an American fashion icon and designer, known for her age-defying style. At 101 years old, she continues to make a significant impact on the fashion industry and remains a legend in the fashion world.
Iris was born in Astoria, Queens, New York. Her mother, Sadye Asofsky, ran a fashion boutique and her father, Samuel Barrel, was an entrepreneur specializing in the supply of mirrors and glass. Both of her parents were Jewish. In the early stages of her career, her father played a crucial role in helping her navigate the fashion industry.
Iris studied art history at New York University and attended art school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1948, she married Carl Apfel, and their marriage lasted 67 years until Carl’s passing in 2015, just days before his 101st birthday.
During her career, Iris worked for Women’s Wear Daily, interior designer Elinor Johnson, and as a personal assistant to illustrator Robert Goodman. In 1950, she and her husband founded the textile company “Old World Weavers,” which specialized in the restoration of antique fabrics. The company’s notable clients included museums and various US presidents.
Iris’s unique style and contribution to fashion were recognized in 2005 when The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City showcased an exhibition dedicated to her called “Rara Avis (Rare Bird): The Irreverent Iris Apfel.” She has also been acknowledged as one of the 50 most fashionable women in their fifties.
Currently, Iris is the face of cosmetics brand “MAC” and has launched her own line of jewelry called “Iris Apfel Jewelry.” In 2018, she released her biography titled “Iris Apfel: Accidental Icon”.
Iris Apfel views the process of creating style and choosing outfits as a deeply creative endeavor, akin to art. Her unique approach to fashion has attracted a diverse group of admirers, including acclaimed musicians like Duke Ellington and esteemed photographer Bill Cunningham of the New York Times.
