Jersey was originally a dense fabric made from sheep’s wool. It was primarily used to make warm, comfortable, and practical clothing for fishermen and sailors because it provided protection against windy and cold weather. Over time, jersey fabric was also utilized for sewing stockings and underwear.
The distinctive feature of jersey fabric, which sets it apart from other types of knitwear, is its one-sided knitting. The material looks different from the front and back sides. In jersey, the fabric stretches mainly in the transverse direction, and along the cut, it twists towards the front surface. These characteristics make jersey fabric easily recognizable.
