Lycra is a type of highly elastic synthetic fabric that can stretch up to 5-8 times its original size. It is also known as spandex in the US and elastane in Europe.
Lycra was first developed by the DuPont Corporation in the 1950s, building upon earlier advancements made by the German company IG Farben in the 1930s, which created polyurethane.
Lycra is commonly combined with other fabrics in various proportions. Even as little as 2% of Lycra can significantly enhance the elasticity and durability of the fabric.
